New York Public Holidays

Unlike most other countries the United States has virtually no public holidays on which all employees in the country receive a day off of work and all business is halted. Each state may have different state holidays but all observe the annual federal holidays, however, they may alter the dates of observance or add or subtract holidays according to local custom. In Manhattan there is no day that everything is closed there are always supermarkets pharmacys and most likley a few cafes and resturants open even on federal holidays which usually see only banks and other financial institutions closed 

 

Below is a list of the annual federal holidays in New York

 

New Year's Day 1st January - Celebrates beginning of the Year

 

Martin Luther King Jr Day - Third Monday in January


President's Day - Washington's Birthday


Memorial Day - Last Monday in May


Independence Day 4 July - Celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence


Labor DayFirst Monday in September - Celebrates workers and the labor movement


Columbus Day Second Monday in October - Honors Christopher Columbus


Veterans Day / Armistice Day 11 November - Honors all veterans of the United States


Thanksgiving Day - Fourth Thursday in November - Traditionally celebrates the giving of thanks for the autumn harvest


Christmas Day 25 December - Traditionally celebrates the birth of Jesus.
